project 537additions and alterations
brief The initial brief was for a new 2 storey home. This idea was reviewed via a few concept sketches. It was decided that working with the original home would be more appropriate. The owners intention was to 'develop' the property with the view of selling the property in 5 years time. The brief was a very detailed list of inclusions based on optimal resale. It was important to the client that I consider the 'wow' factor whilst developing the plans. The property backs onto natural bushland and has fantastic distant views. I wanted to ensure these natural elements received the attention they deserved. solution The concept was to do minimal work to the existing house and insert a new double storey form that would contain the main bedroom with modern facilities and an everyday living area on the ground floor. The concept was developed in plan form, once this was set, the next stage was to assess the possible built form. After some consideration the final solution was a bold new wedge form that makes no attempt to relate to the existing 1960's home. The new addition improved the homes aspect whilst limiting undesirable impacts upon adjoining properties. The window proportions, wall textures and finishes were all treated differently to contrast with the original home. With further refinement came the final layers such as shading techniques, natural ventilation paths, ceiling fans. The client was involved throughout the whole process and are enamoured with the results. |
