project 588additions and alterations
brief The clients wanted to replace an existing deck older style deck to the front of their house with something that better reflected their needs. Their brief was to create a large covered outdoor space, a broad shade area that could be used as an extension of their living space. The design should relate to the existing fibro house but not be limited by it. The front yard was the main outdoor space. The owners also needed to replace a carport, this was also addressed in the design. solution Much time was spent considering and assessing sun angles at various times of the year. An initial more elaborate design was rigorously altered down a few times to suit builders cost estimates. The design was refined and sharpened to make all the elements work harder. To improve economy, the building type limited trades to be essentially an all carpentry project. The structure is freestanding which reduced costs associated with alterations and additions. The south western corner of the deck was semi enclosed to improve privacy (visual and acoustic) and protection from prevailing weather. Although it is a small project, it is a functional and dynamic addition that is very well used. before |
