project 614additions and alterations
brief To provide a sympathetic addition that contains a functional kitchen/meals/family room for everyday use, a main bedroom, an additional bathroom plus a swimming pool. Explore possibility a lower ground floor rumpus/guest accommodation. Limit work to the existing house where possible and no change to the front of the house. No budget was discussed. My overriding brief was to increase natural light as the rear addition would be south facing. solution Several roof solutions were presented to the client so they too had an understanding of the issue at hand. Each roof design was presented to the client with accompanying 3D images. This way the client had an accurate visual representation of the design with accompanying solar studies. This enabled them to understand how light would penetrate to the 'everyday living space' throughout the day. The resulting skillion roof was the way to achieve natural light over the existing house. The new roof is simple and butts into the existing form which in turn allowed for a series north facing highlight windows over the space. Further, an operable component within the balcony roof allows for additional light into the outdoor entertaining area. Further thought was required to get the lower ground floor to work. The floor level on the ground floor was raised to increase the ceiling height to the rumpus room below. The addition meets the clients brief and is a dynamic contrast to the existing house. The owners favourite feature is the wonderful warm feeling the room has "it has exceeded our expectations well and truly! A room that is a joy to be in." before |
