project 650additions and alterations
brief The project was to create a modern light and airy family home from an existing house the owners had never liked. The project started with looking at ways to improve the street elevation to create something striking and bold. One thing lead to another and the whole project was reassessed. The owner of the property was also the builder and had a great vision for this large corner block. The brief was for a dynamic looking home for a family of four. The design was to include 4 bedrooms, a rumpus, small study and a kitchen as the hub of the home. The plans were also include a pool and appropriate landscaping. A priority for the owner was to make sure the home looked good from all angles. Important considerations during the design stage were ensuring privacy from adjoining properties, the need to improve natural light and to make the most of an unusual block. solution The corner block was a major factor in the purchase of the block. The large frontage provided the perfect setting to create a statement within the streetscape. Privacy between the homes has been improved via a covered patio area. The high level frosted glass louvers block sightlines but maintain openness. The use of landscape screening & light structures are carefully placed. Light into the house has been enhanced to a light & airy feeling. The large clerestory spreads light down the glass stairwell. Transparent walls & openings help evenly distribute borrowed light. Unusual block shape was an opportunity to extend the plan with a better use of space. Relocating the vast driveway to reclaim the front yard as a quality outdoor space. As the landscape develops, these areas will establish. The result is an awesome transformation to dynamic looking house that demands attention. Above all, it is a family home that is comfortable, functional & achieves the clients brief. This project was a collaborative effort with the owner/builder. before |
